Content Description From the Collection: The William Veazie Pratt papers document Admiral Pratt’s active naval career from 1910 to 1933, and through his retirement until his death in 1957. They consist of official and personal materials that are especially important for an insight into the problems facing the U.S. Navy during the first three decades of the twentieth century. Included are materials on the Washington Naval Conference, 1921–1922; naval disarmament; U.S. naval policy in the 1920s and 1930s; and the Naval War College in the 1920s.The bulk of the papers were acquired by the Naval War College Foundation from William Veazie Pratt, Jr., of Belfast, Maine, in four separate accessions made between 1968 and 1971. Photocopies of Pratt materials located in the Naval History and Heritage Command, Washington, D.C., and in the Hoover Presidential Library, West Branch, Iowa, are also included.The papers are divided into five series: Correspondence; Writings and Speeches; Miscellany; Copies of Pratt Papers in Other Repositories; and Conference and Committee Records and Reports.Series I, Correspondence, 1901–1963 Series I is divided into three subseries: official, personal, and letters of Mrs. Pratt. Official correspondence consists of memoranda, telegrams, letters received, and copies of letters sent to naval officers, government officials, and civilian associates, 1910–1957. Scope and Contents From the Collection: This collection contains correspondence, meeting minutes, speeches, newspaper articles, lectures, audio and video tape recordings, articles, and photographs relating to James B. Stockdale’s academic and naval careers from 1965 through 2005. The bulk of this collection documents his correspondence and work at the Naval War College, specifically his administrative and educational roles. Prominent correspondents include Professor Joseph G. Brennan (1910-2004), Admirals Carlisle Trost (1930-), Thomas Hayward (1924-), James Holloway III (1922-), Julien J. LeBourgeois (1923-2012), and Senators John Chafee (1922-1999), Sam Nunn (1938-), and John Tower (1925-1991). The majority of the correspondence relates to his professional work and responsibilities. Along with Stockdale’s published and unpublished writings on moral leadership, his prisoner of war experiences, and the mind in captivity, there are several articles by other academics and writers contained in this collection. Significant speeches from 1965-1993, which includes his time as president of the Naval War College, are in the collection. His speeches on values, leadership, and his prisoner of war experiences were in high demand. Of particular interest within this collection are two volumes of lectures for the popular course entitled Foundations of Moral Obligation team-taught by Stockdale and Brennan. Stockdale recounts his time as a POW, including the torture and isolation he experienced. He also discusses the lasting effects of mental abuse, including fear and guilt, as well the enduring effects of physical abuse. The speech is followed up with a Question and Answer period, in which Stockdale addresses topics of interest including current affairs.

Please note that the cassette tape ends abruptly while Stockdale is mid-sentence. This is not an error in digitization.
